Dear Friends of Measure W, November 25, 2002

The El Toro airport is proving harder to eradicate than the mythical vampire. The Newport Beach NIMBYs just don’t give up. To drive a final stake in the heart of the airport, the annexation of El Toro by Irvine must become a reality. This will only happen by establishing an anti-airport majority on the Board of Supervisors at the earliest opportunity.

On November 19, Todd Spitzer resigned his seat on the Board of Supervisors. As the special election for his successor is expected to occur in late January, replacing him with the best possible anti-airport candidate is essential. From his record and preliminary polling data, CSHC has determined Bill Campbell is the best qualified and clearly leading candidate for Third District Supervisor. Accordingly, CSHC is now formally endorsing Bill Campbell for Supervisor, urging all our donors and volunteers to support his candidacy.

For the past six years, Bill Campbell has served us proudly as a member of the State Assembly, 71st District, having been elected three times to the seat. In addition, Bill Campbell has consistently proven his commitment to the anti-airport effort, previously endorsing Measure F and serving as an official signatory of Measure W. His contributions and undying faithfulness to our cause have earned him the trust and loyalty of anti-airport leaders throughout Orange County as well as endorsements from virtually every key elected official.

While it is likely other anti-airport candidates will enter the race, we must be mindful that the only way we can lose is if the anti-airport vote is splintered between various candidates, enabling a pro-airport candidate to steal victory. Furthermore, a pro-airport majority on the Board of Supervisors could significantly delay the non-aviation process, giving pro-airport special interest groups time to conspire new strategies for resurrecting the El Toro airport. To end the battle over El Toro once and for all, we must unite behind the strongest anti-airport candidate possible. Clearly, that person is Bill Campbell.

We’ve come a long way together. Please join us in this all important endgame. Please give your generous support to Bill Campbell for Third District Supervisor. Enclosed is an envelope so you may contribute directly to his campaign and/or volunteer in his behalf. To reach the office of Bill Campbell for Supervisor, please call (714) 508-9700. Thank you. Wishing you a happy holiday season...

Sincerely,

Bill Kogerman, Chairman
