The Fall Chapman survey was conducted by the Ludie and David C. Henley Social Sciences Research Laboratory during  November 14th through December 1st 2001, in English and, where appropriate, Spanish.  Orange County residents at least 18 years of age were surveyed. The sample size was  1,092.  The survey results are accurate plus or minus three percent. 

The survey assesses the impact the September 11th terrorist  attack had on Orange County residents. 
 


Executive Summary


Two months after  the September terrorist attacks 73% of those surveyed feel that another terrorist attack is likely to occur in the United States. However,  75% said that Orange County was unlikely to be a target and 62% said that they weren't worried that a family member or friend would be a victim. 62% said that they were not personally worried about traveling on an airplane because of the risk of a terrorist attack.  55% said they had prayed more than usual; 52% had cried, a third (32%) had difficulty concentrating on the job, and a quarter (26%) had difficulty sleeping. 68% said they had become more interested in foreign affairs, and 80% said they had watched a television program about terrorism or a related topic, but only 14% had read a book on the subject. Residents were far more likely to have donated money (65%) than blood (13%). 

El Toro Airport
Of particular importance to Orange County is whether the September 11 attacks influenced citizens attitudes toward the proposed airport at El Toro.  13% said that the 9/11 attack had influenced their position on a proposed airport at El Toro. Of these, 70% said they were less likely to support an airport at El Toro. 56% said they would support a ballot measure calling for a huge park instead of an airport at El Toro, 26% said they would oppose it and 18% said they didn't know.
