From the minutes of the Airport Land Use Commission meeting
of October 16, 2003
City of Irvine General Plan Amendment and Zone Change, Lower Peters Canyon.
Commissioner O'Malley voiced his opposition to an action that would include
a notice of airport in vicinity in light of the Navy's letters saying there
is not going to be an airport, and Measure W, etc.
The Chairman opined that the proposed
notice sounds realistic to him in view of the latest uncertain status of
the air base property, and a discussion ensued about the ALUC's position
and about OCRAA's views on the likelihood of a future El Toro airport.
Commissioner [Patty] Campbell explained, as her city's OCRAA member, that
the focus is on finding ways to get people to other airports than LAX. She
noted the project to widen the 1-22 and 1-405 freeways, which would eliminate
45 homes in Seal Beach if the north side of the 1-405 is used. She expressed
her displeasure recalling that the El Toro airport would not have cost even
one house, nor caused flights over one house under the "V Plan." She repeated
that the group's looking at El Toro was intended to provide an airport for
south county residents and keep their traffic out of the north county cities
such as Seal Beach, emphasizing that the intent was to solve the south county's
airport needs without further burdening the north county cities.
Commissioner O'Malley reiterated that the El Toro airport is a dead issue,
which even the OCRAA Chairman has acknowledged, adding that the ALUC is wasting
time and money dealing with the matter.
