The Honorable Ken Calvert
House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515
Dear Congressman Calvert,
Thank you for your recent letter regarding the City of Los Angeles' efforts
to reconsider reuse of Marine Corps Air Station El Toro as a civilian airport.
The Department appreciates your support, and remains committed to the right
of the voters and residents of Orange County to determine the land use within
Orange County.
Our goal has consistently been to convey the property in accordance with
local reuse planning. When the community voted against establishing an airport,
we initiated our efforts to convey the property through public sale for use
in accordance with local zoning and land use plans, This will ensure that
the future use of the property is consistent with the priorities of the local
community. The Department is proceeding with the public sale process.
A similar response to also being sent to Congressman Miller. As always,
if I can be of further assistance, please lot me know.
Sincerely,
Hanford T. Johnson
Secretary of the Navy
