JWA March Passengers, Flights Up -
OC Business Journal
John Wayne Airport reported boosts in passenger traffic and flights for
March. It was the second-straight month of increases in both
categories, and the rate of the gains in March exceeded February’s
growth.
The airport handled 832,000 passengers last month compared with the
same period last year, an increase of 7%. Passenger traffic increased
5.5% in February.
Commercial flights grew 2% to about 3,300 in March. That followed a
gain of about 1% in February.
Airport spokesperson Jenny Wedge attributed the March increases to new
activity by Dallas-based Southwest Airlines—which began flying to its
home city from John Wayne in November. An increase in passenger totals
for Seattle-based Alaska Airlines also contributed to the gain in
March, she said.
International passenger counts were down 15% in March.
Southwest and Alaska are set to increase their numbers in that arena,
as well.
Southwest plans to begin flights from JWA to Puerto Vallarta in June—it
now flies to Cabo San Lucas and Mexico City from here.
Alaska plans to begin flying to Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos in
October.
Ontario responds to court denying LA motion
In response to Riverside County Superior Court Judge Gloria
Connor Trask denying a motion by Los Angeles to dismiss Ontario's
airport lawsuit, Alan D. Wapner, Ontario Mayor pro Tem and President of
the Ontario International Airport Authority, issued this statement:
We are extremely pleased and not at all surprised by today's court
decision denying a late attempt by Los Angeles to dismiss Ontario's
claims for L.A.'s breach of its contractual and fiduciary duties.
Ontario continues to vigorously prepare for trial on August 17, 2015
where we will seek damages and an injunction to regain control of
Ontario International Airport.

Passenger traffic at Bob Hope Airport ascends -
Burbank Leader
The number of passengers traveling through Bob Hope Airport increased
in February, compared to the same month in 2014, despite a drop in the
number of seats available during the period.
"They're using aircraft more efficiently," said Dan Feger, the
airport's executive director, referring to air carriers that have been
flying fewer, but more-full flights in recent years.
Feger noted that the number of available seats in February was down
2.2% — roughly 9,000 seats — compared to the same month in 2014, while
the number of passengers climbed 2.2%, up from 278,420 to 284,496 in a
year-to-year comparison.
Airport officials have in recent months undertaken new efforts to
increase passenger traffic at the airfield, including hiring a
consultant to develop a rebranding campaign to raise awareness of the
airport among travelers outside the Los Angeles region and another
project to highlight the "Burbank advantage" to air carriers in a bid
to increase service to the airfield.
Other airports in the region also reported a mixed bag in passenger
tallies for February. The number of travelers at Los Angeles International Airport
rose by 3.9%. There was also a 5.5% hike at John Wayne Airport in Orange County
and a 0.6% increase at Ontario
International Airport. Long
Beach Airport saw a 12.5% decrease in February.
Long Beach Airport likely to see a decline
- Signal Tribune
Long Beach
Airport is projecting a dip in revenue this year as JetBlue Airways has
recently scaled back the number of flights the airline will be offering
this summer while Horizon Air, a regional carrier of Alaska Airlines,
pulled out of the market in January, according to airport officials.
In a phone
interview, Long Beach Airport Director Bryant Francis confirmed with
the Signal Tribune that passenger traffic at the airport has already
dropped so far this year, with enplaned passengers for January and
February down 12 percent compared to the same time period last year.
Even though
summer historically is the “busiest travel season” for airlines,
JetBlue has decided to offer four fewer flights this year than last
year, he said.
Passenger Traffic Inches Up at Burbank
Airport - San Fernando Business Journal
Passenger
traffic at Burbank Bob Hope Airport improved by a little over 2 percent
in February.
The airport
served 284,496 passengers, an increase of 2.2 percent from the 278,420
passengers served in February 2014.
Driving the
increase was Southwest Airlines, which has cut flights at the airport,
but is filling its remaining flights with higher passenger counts. It
transported 216,869 passengers, up 3.4 percent, or more than 7,000 from
a year earlier.
JetBlue Airways
was up 4.4 percent to 6,499 passengers.
US Airways
experienced the biggest drop, falling 11.3 percent to 12,020
passengers. Delta Airlines was off 10.4 percent to 4,309 passengers
Bob Hope Airport
has struggled in the past few years as flight traffic and passenger
counts dwindled amid the recession, and as carriers consolidated
operations at larger airports to keep planes full. Passenger activity
peaked in 2008 with 5.84 million people coming through the terminal.
