Voters Rights Petition Drive Exceeds Goal - Nears Finale

Signature gatherers, for the Safe and Healthy Communities Initiative, have been receiving excellent response to their campaign, which began in April with Supervisors Todd Spitzer and Tom Wilson signing the first petitions. Over 5,000 volunteers, circulating petitions throughout the county, have already collected substantially far more than double the number of signatures needed to qualify for the March 7, 2000 election.

Petition Drive Chairman, Jim Davy, said "This is the biggest grass-roots petition drive in the county's history. People love the idea that this initiative finally gives them a choice on where airports, jails and toxics get dumped. Now we need everyone to get the last signatures to us - for tallying and delivery to the Registrar. "

Approximately 71,000 valid petitions must be delivered to the Registrar of Voters by September 1. Over twice that number of signatures have been collected but the committee wants more.

The Safe and Healthy Communities Initiative gives Orange County voters the choice on locating major publicly-funded projects that negatively impact their homes. It requires county planners to complete environmental impact reports, and hold public hearings, before asking voters to approve new or expanded airports, hazardous landfills, or major jails near residential neighborhoods. These projects then must receive two-thirds voter approval before the county can deprive residents of their quality of life.

Volunteers can reach Petition Drive Chairman Jim Davy at 949-498-0833, or by mail at PO Box 249, El Toro, CA 92630, to return signed petitions.
