RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD
OF EDUCATION
SADDLEBACK VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA
June 24, 1997
WHEREAS, the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro is scheduled for closure by the year 1999; and
WHEREAS, the Orange County board of Supervisors has certified an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) in December, 1996 for the development of a commercial passenger and cargo airport at the site of the MCAS El Toro; and
WHEREAS, the Saddleback Valley Unified School District (SVUSD) serves nearly 32,000 students in 85 schools many of which are located in close proximity to the proposed airport and flight patterns; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of SVUSD is responsible for providing the highest quality education in the best possible learning environment; and
WHEREAS, the extent of the negative impacts of noise and air pollution on the education and health of SVUSD student is unknown; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of SVUSD is responsible for the health, safety and security of students on its school sites;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Trustees of the SVUSD strongly opposes the location of a commercial passenger and cargo airport at the present site of the MCAS El Toro and urges the adoption of Reuses Alternatives that will not negatively impact the health and learning of students in the SVUSD.
