Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro Reuse Plan

Whereas, the United States Marine Corps Air Station at El Toro, is located within the boundaries of the Saddleback Community College District, and

Whereas, the Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, is scheduled for closure by the year 1999, and the land reuse planning process has identified three alternatives for this site, including: (A) a commercial passenger and cargo airport, (B) a cargo and general aviation facility, and (C) nonaviation purposes, namely residential, light industrial, recreational, educational and transportation uses; and

Whereas, residents of south Orange County have protested Alternatives A and B, the aviation uses, stating that the environmental impact report is seriously flawed in its assessment of Alternatives A and B and would result in high levels of pollution, noise, and traffic for the residents of south Orange County; and

Whereas, Irvine Valley College and Saddleback College are located under the proposed flight pattern for the passenger or cargo facility at MCAS, El Toro; and

Whereas, the Board of Trustees of the Saddleback Community College District is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of its students and providing an environment conducive to learning;

Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Board of Trustees of the Saddleback Community College District strongly protests the location of an international airport or cargo facility at the present site of the Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, and strongly urges the adoption of Reuse Alternative C, nonaviation activities, of the Draft MCAS El Toro Community Reuse Plan.
