Statement of U.S. Rep. Christopher Cox
On the Future of MCAS-El
Toro After the Navy’s Record of Decision
WASHINGTON (Tuesday, April 23, 2002)—Today, the Department of the Navy
issued formal
approval of Orange County’s plans for the future of the MCAS-El Toro base.
I am very pleased that
the Department of the Navy has issued a Record of Decision that will result
in the implementation
of Measure W.
As the Record of Decision indicates, the next step is to transfer the property
from federal to local
ownership. I have the Navy’s assurances that any auction of real property
at El Toro will be
conducted consistent with Measure W, and in cooperation with the land use
planning efforts of the
City of Irvine. Finally, today’s Record of Decision makes clear at the
federal level what is already
an accomplished fact at the local level: the property will be developed
for parkland and other
Measure W-consistent uses, and not for aviation.
