An "Intercept Survey" was conducted at John Wayne Airport during in July.  Departing passenger were approached  throughout the day and the terminal.

45 percent were traveling for business. The remainder were a mix of "pleasure/leisure", "personal", "education" and "other".

Business travelers were  41 percent in 2003 and 49 percent in 2000.

Of the 560 air travelers surveyed, 66 percent were visitors and the remaining 34 percent were residents. The "resident" designation in this survey included several travelers who gave their home cities in Southern California counties other than Orange.  In 2003 visitors accounted for 60 percent of those surveyed.  In 2000 visitors were 55 percent but the classification of surrounding county residents may have changed.
