ORANGE COUNTY, Calif., Dec. 3, 1996 -- The Orange County Council of the American Electronics Association (AEA) today announced the results of a survey measuring its member support of the proposed El Toro Airport development.
From the AEA member companies surveyed, 26% favored the proposed airport, while 64% opposed the airport, with 10% voting to delay and re-execute the Environmental Impact Report (EIR).
"By conducting this survey, we have found that the Orange County high technology business community is not monolithically aligned in support of the proposed El Toro Airport development," said Phil Beaudoin, Executive Director, Orange County Council, AEA. "The results of the survey also found that member companies in opposition are geographically spread over the county, despite most of our membership being South County concentrated."
"It appears that a majority of our member companies have concerns with either the airport or the planning process, as executed thus far. The Orange County Board of Supervisors really needs to reconsider the reuse propositions," said Peter Craig, Chairman, Orange County Council, AEA.
The El Toro airport development project is a plan to convert the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station into an international airport when the base closes in 1999. After several months of preparation, the proposal awaits consideration by the Orange County Board of Supervisors sometime this month.
The American Electronics Association is the leading high tech trade association in the United States, representing 170 members in Orange County and more than 3,000 companies nationally from all segments of the U.S. electronics industry, from software and semiconductors to computers and communications systems.
