EIR Files - Technical details

From the comfort of your home, you can read Volumes 1, 2A, 2B and Appendix F of the EIR (so far), search, copy, print, Submit Questions, and otherwise help the county in its effort to solicit feedback . After all, that's why they gave all of Orange County 20 copies and 60 days. These 1600 pages should keep you busy for awhile.

WARNING: We were unsuccessful in obtaining an electronic version of the EIR from the County, so these pages have been reverse engineered using Optical Character Recognition technology. It's not foolproof and will occasionally get some letters and numbers wrong. It has a really hard time with italics, and numbers inside of tables, and text that is on a gray background. The good news is that the core reports (Volume 1, 2A and 2B) are mostly plain text.

How to use:
* Each Volume is split into multiple Adobe Acrobat files.  Each are between 1 and 5 megs, so they will load slowly depending on your connection to the Internet.  Each volume is also available in one large Acrobat file - usually between 10 and 15 megs.
* Suggest you download the one large file if you want to work off your local disk, rather than web.  It will load much faster and minimize load on the website.  It will also let you search for keywords throughout the entire volume.  Since the EIR was not published with a cross-reference or index, this is the best we can do.
* You should print out the first few pages of Volume 1 since it contains the index to the full EIR.  It also contains the 6 page list of abbreviations used throughout the document.
* Note that when you are inside Acrobat, Ctrl/F does not work - those keys will only search the text on a standard html web page. To search for text inside the Acrobat document use the binoculars icon on the Acrobat toolbar.  Similarly, to copy text out of the EIR into your question, right-click on the EIR page and click the Text Tool, and then the Copy Icon on the Acrobat toolbar.
* You can download the Acrobat reader for free from Adobe, and many other sites.
* There's not much time to chat about points you uncover, but you might want to start threads on the Message Board to discuss specific topics and get input from others, before submitting a question (virtual "study groups"?)
* You need a frame enabled browser.
* We'll be adding more volumes as we get them scanned.

The links at the bottom of the viewing page make it easy to research an item, post a note to the message board, review the How-To Write a Question Guide, and finally submit a Question to the County.
